Another Scary Christmas Film List — This Time from the Folks at Rotten Tomatoes

As the Christmas countdown continues, “Ho-Ho-Horror!  10 Scary Christmas Movies” is a rather eccentric offering by Michael Adams from the popular movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.  Because nSantaMartiansot all of these are precisely horror, but are possibly just scary due to context, or even, like SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS, frightening mainly because they were even made.  As for unnerving context, perennial favorite IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE makes #4 on the list insofar as it starts with a “banker-instigated financial meltdown” and, to continue to quote from the site, “[t]hat it ends with a popular bail-out of the bank (well, Building And Loan) is another reason this one won’t be remade anytime soon.”

Be that as it may, there are others that fit more easily into standard horror, including some that were also cited on HALLOWEEN FOREVERMORE’s “Top Five” list on December 3.  So view at your own risk by pressing here.

  1. That’s hilarious, what you said about Santa Meets the Martians –yes, I can well imagine how frightening that very idea is.
Thanks for all the suggestions! We’re watching a Poe story made into a movie. It’s not frightening unless you start thinking about madhouses in the 1890’s. It was a far cry from “Gay Nineties”, I tell you! A really good movie, though. “Stonehurst Asylum” . May the Krampus be kind to ye all!

  2. Marge, thanks! I actually wrote a story based on Santa and the Martians about nine years back, “Bubba Claus Conquers the Martians,” that was published in Yard Dog Press’s HOUSTON, WE’VE GOT BUBBAS zombie anthology, so it may be an ill wind that blows no good. This was part of their “Bubbas of the Apocalypse” series, for which I think I’m still getting a few bucks a year royalty (for stories in four of the series in all)! Also, tonight the ABC Family Channel is supposed to be showing SCROOGED which, having not seen it before, I’ll be looking forward to.

  3. Bubbas of the Apocalypse is simply to die for, I’m sure. The very title sends chills. Somewhere. LOL!! anyway it sounds like a fun read and knowing your work, I’m sure it’s great!
